NHS EHR System Two Years Behind Schedule

Plans to provide every National Health Service patient in England with an electronic health record are running at least two years behind schedule, according to Health Minister Lord Warner, who oversees the project, the Financial Times reports.

The electronic care record system might not be implemented until early 2008 partly because of delays in providing the software, which is being created by iSoft and other companies. Also contributing to the delays is a "fierce and unresolved dispute" within the medical profession over what should be included in the national medical record and how patients' data should be added, according to the Financial Times.

The widely quoted cost of $11.6 billion for the program covers only national contracts for the systems' basic infrastructure and software applications, Warner said. The full cost of the program including staff training, purchasing computers and upgrading and assimilating existing systems will likely be close to $37.5 billion, he said (Timmins, Financial Times, 5/30).

A survey for a BBC Radio program found that 85% of physicians supported the idea of an independent review of the NHS computer system program, BBC News reports.

The survey, which was conducted by research firm Medix, follows a call for a review of the project last month by more than 20 leading computer science academies that are concerned that the system will not be able to meet the demands of the NHS.

Dr. Simon Eccles of Connecting for Health, which oversees the IT project, said his organization would welcome an independent assessment. "[W]e are already under enormous scrutiny, political, financial and otherwise," Eccles said. "We would be happy with further scrutiny, providing we don't delay the project further while answering yet more questions to explain why the project is delayed."

The National Audit Office has been investigating the NHS computer project and expects in the next few weeks to release their report (BBC News, 5/30).

Dear Paulee, thanks so much for your kindness, and it was very regrettable that I could not make it to Xi'an this time. But time is young and I look forward to future opportunities.

About Kaiser's EMR project, here is the PR link by KP. http://ckp.kaiserpermanente.org/newsroom/national/ Bear in mind, it is a self-reporting and marketing site run by Kaiser.

I'm not privileged to disclose non-publicized details on this public forum in complaint with company policies. However, more than happy to chat off-line with you or even better, over a glass of wine next time we meet... maybe in New Orleans?!

Kaiser Permanente to Work With Google As a Significant Contributor to Bring Internet Users More Relevant Health Information

New Google Co-op Technology to Enhance Health Information Search

Oakland, CA -- Kaiser Permanente has been working with Google as one of its initial significant contributors to Google Co-op, www.google.com/coop, a new way for users to search for health-related information on the Internet.

A group of trusted third-party organizations worked with Google to identify and label the best health-related content on the Internet. As one of these significant contributors, Kaiser Permanente has worked with Google to help annotate health content for health-related searches. These labels will appear at the top of Google search results for relevant search queries. Content from www.kaiserpermanente.org will be displayed along with other sites that have been reviewed and recommended by Permanente Medical Group physicians.

As a result, users will have a more effective way to refine their health-related searches. For example, a user searching for “pneumonia” will be shown a set of terms to refine the query, including disease information (symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, etc.), research, news, support groups, and information type (government sites, patient sites, medical professionals, alternative medicine). Upon refining the query, the user will be shown a set of links that have been provided by Kaiser Permanente and the other trusted contributors.

“It is an honor to work with Google to help make health information easier for people to find. Kaiser Permanente has a deep interest and recognized expertise in providing the best health information available,” stated Christine Paige, senior vice president, marketing and internet services. “This is a powerful example of how technology is changing the face of health care and medicine. By putting information in the hands of the consumer we promote the active engagement of individuals in their own health.”
