Two recent announcements show increasing movement toward continued automation of healthcare transactions.

Last week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved funding for a pilot test of an electronic claims attachment.

The foundation of the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange will administer the project, in which Empire Medical Services, a fee-for-service Medicare contractor, will work with providers submitting healthcare claims to demonstrate the use of electronic attachments. The test will involve transmissions between a health plan and providers of various sizes and technical capabilities.

The pilot will assess the impact of electronic claims attachments on claims payments, including a comparison of transactions handled on paper, and it will document early benefits of an automated process. It also will compile and analyze implementation issues.

Another step toward facilitating healthcare transactions is the introduction of Validedi, an in-stream healthcare transaction system from Claredi, a Salt Lake City-based EDI service company.

Validedi provides claim-by-claim validation of a healthcare organization’s EDI transactions.
