RICHMOND, VA — Hospitals are beginning to test the waters to determine how radio frequency identification devices can help them operate their facilities more efficiently.
Two recently announced implementations are aimed at helping facilities track assets and staff movements to help improve workflow.
While use of RFID technology is relatively new within healthcare, some experts now say it eventually will be the primary technology used to track medication administration.
That may mean bar coding, while highly touted for ensuring correct medication delivery, may be only an interim technology, but one that hospitals will feel forced to implement, facing pressure from the government and care quality groups.
But for now, RFID is being implemented at Bon Secours Richmond (Va.) Health System, which operates three hospitals. The system will use technology from Agility Healthcare Solutions, Richmond, to comprehensively track and manage its assets.
Called AgileTrac, the system is intended to use RFID-affixed chips to help locate equipment, measure their utilization, reduce theft and hoarding, and schedule maintenance.
RFID chips on equipment are tracked by a wireless network that Agility Healthcare installs. The network and technology then can be used for additional purposes that can be added on over time. For example, Bon Secours might use the system to track patients, said Fran Dirksmeier, Agility’s CEO.
“The beauty of this is that the infrastructure we put in can be leveraged,” he said. “We started with equipment management because it’s a universal problem, and there’s a very good return on investment with it. The infrastructure gets paid for by equipment management.”
The ROI comes from better deployment of existing assets, keeping them in service from proper maintenance, and reducing unnecessary expensive equipment purchases, he said.
Those are big problems within hospitals, said Ned Simpson, a principal with Computer Science Corp. and chair of HIMSS’ Auto-ID and Bar Coding Task Force. “When you do a physical sweep of a hospital, you generally find you have more assets than you thought you had,” he said.
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is testing RFID technology in its emergency department to track equipment, charts and staff movements in its emergency department.
The technology will use triangulation involving access points for a wireless network to show where equipment and charts are on a map of the 48,000-square-foot emergency department, said John Halamka, MD, the facility’s CIO. It also will yield data to study workflow and staff movement, he said.
Halamka believes hospitals will eventually turn to RFID for medication and care administration. Bar coding will require staff to use a bar code scanner with each patient, adding repetitive steps to workflow.
“RFID will be a technology that supplants bar code technology,” he said. “Hospitals should go slow on adoption of bar coding.”
Simpson believes that it will take time before RFID is ready to be implemented. “Hospitals should use the technology that’s on the shelf today,” he said. “The adverse effects of delay is pretty severe.”
